Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson, representatives from eight poultry companies and several farmers met in Tulsa Tuesday to talk the lawsuit he filed against them.

The lawsuit says the chicken litter farmers uses as fertilizer contains high levels of phosphorous and when it rains, all that phosphorous runs into Oklahoma waters and pollutes them. Some of that water is used for drinking.

Edmondson wants the poultry companies to take steps to reduce the environmental impact of chicken litter and to pay money for "damages".

The companies have done some of that, but Edmondson says it's not enough. The two sides are talking to try to avoid a long, expensive court battle.

Those talks are scheduled to continue on Wednesday.
