HESPERIA, Calif. (AP) -- Dozens of homes in Hesperia, California, have been evacuated as a wildfire burns out of control in hills and canyons in the city east of Los Angeles.

A San Bernardino County Fire spokeswoman says the fire has burned about 900 acres and is approaching populated areas.

Authorities had ordered an initial mandatory evacuation of 30 homes late Saturday afternoon, but within hours ordered many more homes evacuated.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Hesperia is about 80 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
