OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) -- Former Oklahoma State golfer Pablo Martin is off to a strong start at the U.S. Open, shooting a one-over 71 in today's opening round.

Martin is three shots behind leader Nick Dougherty entering Friday's second round. Martin turned pro last month after his junior year at Oklahoma State, where he was named the Big 12 golfer of the year the past two seasons.

He's playing in only his second pro tournament and is tied for fifth with Tiger Woods and 14 other golfers.

Former Oklahoma State golfer Scott Verplank and former Oklahoma golfer Hunter Mahan are another two strokes back after they both shot 3-over 73.
