WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) _ Oklahoma Congressman and US Senate candidate Brad Carson votes for an amendment to the US Constitution banning gay marriage.

The Claremore Democrat voted for the Marriage Protection Amendment that would define marriage as between a man and a woman. House Joint Resolution 106 would amend the US Constitution so that no state could allow same-sex marriage.

The House emphatically rejected the proposal yesterday on a 227-to-186 vote, 49 votes shy of the two-thirds needed for approval. Carson was one of only 36 Democrats to vote in favor of the ban.

A lifelong Southern Baptist, Carson called marriage the bedrock of society and a hallowed institution.

Carson is locked in a tight race for the US Senate with former Oklahoma Congressman Doctor Tom Coburn of Muskogee.
