Governor's drug plan clear state Senate committee

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Parts of Governor Henry's plans to reduce the cost of prescription drugs in Oklahoma were approved Wednesday by a state Senate subcommittee.

The governor's plan includes allowing Oklahomans to buy cheaper prescription drugs from countries such as Canada, which buy drugs from US pharmaceutical companies.

One bill allows Oklahoma pharmacies to buy US made prescription drugs from Canada and sell them in the state. The bills also create a Web site where citizens could order their drugs from Canada and other nations. and calls for creation of what Henry calls a "SmartCard" to allow people to take advantage of existing drug discount programs.

The proposals now go to the full Senate Budget Committee for consideration.
