Coastal North Carolina Deals With Flooding From Dennis

Updated:
(Raleigh, North Carolina-AP) -- It's a wet, miserable day for
hundreds of people in coastal North Carolina, thanks to Tropical
Storm Dennis.

The town manager in Belhaven says his streets were six feet
under water at the height of the storm.

State emergency officials say 60 percent of Ocracoke
Island is flooded. They say up to 150 homes were
flooded in the Harlow community in Craven County.

Meanwhile, officials are opening the northern part of Hatteras
Island to all vehicle traffic. The lower part of the island is open
only to four-wheel-drive traffic, but crews hope to have a
washed-out section of highway resurfaced by nightfall.

At one point last week, Dennis carved a trench that cut Hatteras
Island in two.
