Top-seed UCLA loses; California beats Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Monique Marier homered with two out in the top of the ninth inning to help Florida State upset top-seeded UCLA 2-1 Thursday in the opening session of the NCAA Women's College World Series.

California beat Oklahoma 4-2 on Thursday in the day's second game.

The eighth-seeded Seminoles (54-18) snapped a five game losing streak to the Bruins (54-8). FSU plays Friday against California. UCLA and Oklahoma play Saturday in an elimination game.

Marier's shot off Keira Goerl (31-5) was her ninth homer of the season. In the bottom of the inning with two runners on base, Marier made a diving catch to end the game.

FSU's Leslie Malerich (34-12) threw a complete game.

The Golden Bears (53-19) took advantage of four Oklahoma errors, two of which came in the third inning when California scored three runs. Third baseman Candace Harper's single scored one of the runs in the inning and the other two were scored on an error by OU second baseman Tifany Weight.

California scored its fourth run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Chelsea Spencer.

The Sooners (49-15) scored their only runs on a two-run homer by Christina Enea in the sixth inning off winning pitcher Jocelyn Forest (26-12), who struck out 14 batters in going the distance.

Jennifer Stewart (22-7) took the loss for the Sooners and allowed six hits, striking out three and walking three.
