The Tulsa County Assessor announces plans for a sweeping audit of tax-exempt apartments.
Assessor Jack Gordon wants to know if the operators of the apartments are living up to their part of the bargain, in exchange for getting tax-free status. He filed a lawsuit in Tulsa County Court Monday.
The apartments have to meet certain mandates, including 75% occupancy by low-income families. Gordon will look at all three thousand low income housing units in Tulsa County. "They’ve been given tax free bonds, they don't pay any income tax and they don't pay any property tax, so until they do what they said they would do, they shouldn't receive the property tax exemption."
Several tax-exempt apartment complexes in Tulsa have already been placed back on the tax rolls as a result of the Assessor's Office audit.
