Governor Keating addresses economic impact of I-40 bridge detour

Governor Keating made a stop in Webbers Falls Wednesday to talk about the impact of the collapse on surrounding communities.

During his visit, Governor Frank Keating outlined several key areas that will be concentrated on to help in the recovery from the I-40 bridge collapse, including help for communities near here who are dealing with economic problems since the tragedy.

The Governor and Commerce and Transportation officials outlined a four-point plan Wednesday afternoon. It includes state reimbursement of expenses for city and county agencies, including the cost of manpower. Also looking into ways to get federal help to offset losses in income for area business owners. And an anticipated 80% drop in tax revenue for nearby communities. Also, more funds and attention will be dedicated to detour routes that are seeing wear and tear from increased traffic.

And it all begins with efforts to rebuild the bridge. That construction began Wednesday evening, and state help for Webbers Falls and Gore is pledged to come quickly.
