New quarterback named for TU

(Tulsa-AP) -- Freshman Tyler Gooch is named the starting quarterback for Tulsa after his play in a 26-to-10 loss to Texas-El Paso.

The Golden Hurricane struggled to move the ball against UTEP behind third-year starter Josh Blankenship.

Coach Keith Burns installed Gooch in the third quarter.

Gooch finished with 136 yards passing and 49 rushing and put Tulsa in a position to score twice late in the game.

Burns says his choice to sit Blankenship wasn't easy because of the junior's team leadership.

The decision came after careful evaluation with his coaching staff after losses to Number Ten Fresno State and UTEP.

The coach says neither loss was entirely Blankenship's fault. But Blankenship couldn't get the offense moving at critical times.
