Lawmaker wants to change local tobacco rules

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ An Edmond lawmaker again is trying to repeal a law that prevents cities from creating smoking or tobacco restrictions that are stricter than state law.

Rep. Ray Vaughn also filed a measure that would increase the number of public places, including restaurants and other businesses, where smoking is banned.

The Republican legislator wants his bills assigned to the Public Health Committee, where he believes they would receive a fair hearing. Unsuccessful bills he previously filed regarding tobacco laws were assigned to other committees.

Tobacco lobbyists will fight Vaughn's legislation, said Carter Headrick, manager of field operations for the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids.
