A measure that would allow state funding to be used for stem cell research, in cases that do not use human embryos, has passed an Oklahoma House of Representatives' committee.

In theory, stem cells could be used to repair damaged or defective tissues and treat many currently incurable diseases.  But, because embryonic stem cell research requires the destruction of embryos, it raises serious ethical concerns for many Oklahomans.

Supporters of the bill want scientists to use stem cells obtained from umbilical cord blood.
