It's an opportunity for a summer arts program to help troubled teens. For eight summers, the Tulsa Boys Home has conducted an arts program and the grand finale each summer is an art show and sale. The News On 6's Rick Wells reports this year lots of paintings, pottery, tie-dyed pillows and much more are on display and on sale.
They are getting ready for the big Summer Arts Show and Sale at the Tulsa Boys Home.
"This is a bowl or whatever someone wants it to be," said Wes.
Wes is 17 and the bowl is one of the pieces he made during this summer's program.
Karen Payne's an art teacher from Mannford and one of five instructors for the home.
"Every year I've been surprised at some of the things they've done. A lot of the boys are really talented," said Karen Payne.
Ken Callen is the operations coordinator at the Tulsa Boys Home. He says art is a way of helping the boys work through some of their issues.
"It takes a lot of time, detail, and work to do these things," said Ken Callen.
So, he says it teaches patience. Jacob says it took almost two weeks to finish one of his projects.
"I painted it with dark paint at the bottom as I came up I used water in the brush, yes to thin it out and look lighter at the top," said Jacob.
The finished pieces include drawings, paintings, weaving and lots more and lots of it is for sale. Jacob says his painting of bamboo is priced at $15.
The boys are learning about art and about the value of their own creativity.
The show and sale is Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Tulsa Boys Home.
