Green Country school employees are braving the heat while gearing up for a new year. Classes will be back in session at many districts next week, and teachers are taking to the streets to make sure parents and students are ready.

The News On 6's Chris Wright reports Union teachers had to endure the scorching temperatures while going door-to-door, but administrators want to ensure that everyone shows up on opening day.

Roy Clark Elementary employees spent precious little time in the air conditioning Tuesday afternoon. Teachers gathered at the school before fanning out to knock on the doors of every student in the district.

"It's going to be hot, it's going to be real hot.  My teachers are excited. They told me I probably picked the hottest day of the year to go out.  But every one of them showed up today with a smile on their face and ready to go," said Roy Clark Elementary Teacher Theresa Kiger.

The goal is to make sure parents and their children have no excuse once school gets underway next week.

Besides reminding them about key dates, Roy Clark also delivered school supplies free of charge. Each student was given a backpack, filled with pencils, magnets and information about the upcoming school year.

"They are excited, they are excited.  Not more excited than I am. They're eating me out of house and home," said Erica Randolph.

The Roy Clark teachers say despite the sweltering temperatures, the afternoon on foot was rewarding. They hope, at the very least, they got their message across.

"We are going out to the neighborhood to be a positive influence.  We want them to know that we care. We're excited about school; we want them to be excited about school," said Kiger.

All Union Students head back to class on the 14th. In Tulsa, kids go back to school on Monday the 11th.
