October and Breast Cancer Awareness go together. Here's a retrospective of some of the things people in Green Country did to Think Pink in October of 2008.
Sequoyah High School declared Passionately Pink Night at one of their home football games. The event was sponsored by the North East Oklahoma Cancer Center. Travis Meyer of The News On 6 WARN Team arrived in SKYNEWS 6 and selected the name of the basket of goodies winner.
Out of 153 staff members, the school boasts seven women who have battled and survived breast cancer.
A group at Bradley Elementary in Drumright brought back together their team from the Komen Race for the Cure. The team name was "Kim's Krew" after one of the school's 5th grade teachers who is fighting the battle with breast cancer.
The teacher's name is Kim Kates, and October 23 was her last chemotherapy treatment. Her "Krew"wore their race t-shirts to school on the days of her treatments. So her "Krew" members decked out to celebrate the last day of chemo.
Ator Elementary in Owasso hosted a Think Pink raffle. They raised over $1,000 for the Relay for Life. Second grade teacher Tara Hess was the winner of our Think Pink basket. Dr. Clark Ogilvie, Superintendent of Owasso Schools, drew the winning name and presented Tara with the basket and her winning ticket.
Nonni's Food Company was hard at work in October not only making cookies but raising funds for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Workers joined up with Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure and set an office goal of $500. To reach the goal, employees could buy "jeans days" for $1 per day.
Most couldn't pass up the opportunity to skip the ironing and drycleaners and opted for all 23 working days in October to wear their jeans.
They also held a Passionately Pink Pot Luck Lunch on Oct. 15, raising $5 per meal. Everyone pitched in and brought their favorite dishes and goodies. The 15th was also Pretty in Pink Day! Almost everyone was sporting their favorite pink clothing or accessories.
The company was able to beat their $500 goal.
