McALESTER, Okla. (AP) -- A McAlester man is in the top spot at the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration in Washington, D.C.

A 1973 McAlester High School graduate, Michael Davis was named deputy assistant secretary for operations for the Department of Labor's MSHA office in November. When Bush appointee Richard Stickler left the director's post at MSHA, which left Davis as the most senior civil servant on the job.

A fourth-generation coal miner, Davis has spent 21 years with the federal agency. His family moved to McAlester from West Virginia in the late 1960s, and he spent 13 years in underground mines around the country before going to work for the MSHA.
