The national spotlight is shining on a Green Country band. Crooked X is competing in the CBS Early Show's "Living Room Live" contest. The hard rock band has performed in more than 70 shows, and after just a year and half together, they scored a national debut.
News on 6 reporter Ashli Sims tells us, their rock star rise is even more impressive, because the band members are barely in their teens.
They're a little more high-tech than your typical garage band. In fact, nothing about Crooked X is typical. They've got a big sound, big hair and a big future ahead. And every single member is in middle school.
"Yeah usually they'll come up and, 'how old are you guys 14-15, 15-16.' And we're like no we're 12 and 13. They're like what! Are you kidding me?" 13 year-old band member Forrest French said.
No joke, they actually started as pre-teens, they're first gig a sister's birthday party.
"We were just playing no vocals just cover songs, and then after that it was Boomer's sister's birthday party, same place. But I actually tried singing this time and it was quite hideous," French said.
The foursome has gone from hideous to one of the hottest bands in town, playing local music festivals and venues they're not old enough to get into.
"We actually get permission, we have to get permission slips to go to our gigs," said French.
When the group heard about CBS Early Show's living room live competition they decided to go for it, and their four-minute video was chosen by producers to air on the show. If the group gets enough online votes, they stand a chance to go to New York City to perform live for the Early Show.
Crooked X's performance is already getting good reviews online.
"I guess to know that people nationwide have heard our music and are talking about it I think is pretty cool," band member Jesse Morton Cooper said.
The group says this is an important stepping stone to people seeing them as more than just a bunch of kids.
"I don't like being in the stereotype of saying they're only 12 and 13,†French said. “I don't want people saying that I want them to say, 'Wow, they really rock!' they're good for however old they are it doesn’t matter."
Crooked X's performance is drumming a lot of chatter online. One guy says he owns a record label and wants to sign them, others just talk about their star power.
If you want to vote for the band, just go to CBS Early Show. If they win, they will be in the running for a network appearance on the Early Show.
