It is National Fire Prevention Week, and this year the focus is on safety in the kitchen.
The theme for this year is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen" as cooking is the top reason for house fires in the United States, according to the National Fire Prevention Association. People should keep their cooktops clear and refrain from wearing loose clothing when cooking.
There is also an emphasis on keeping children safe in the kitchen.
“We have kids doing distanced learning, staying at home,” said Andy Little, Tulsa Fire Department. “We just want to make sure you understand the importance of safety in the kitchen because once that burn happens, you can’t take that away.”
Easy steps to take is to establish a safe zone, which outlines boundaries for kids in the kitchen. Another way to prevent accidents is to not leave the handles of pots and pans hanging over the edge for a child to pull down on.
Little also said this is a good time to test your smoke detector and change the batteries.
