An Owasso father who went viral for his video supporting his gay son said he is overwhelmed by the amount of love his family has received.
John Wyatt said when his 15-year-old son Caden came out to his family last year, they wanted to support him. Now, millions of people around the world also support the teenager.
"We are fixing to shock Oklahoma," John Wyatt says in the TikTok.
It all started with a flag.
“I was scared to put it up at first," Caden Wyatt said.
John Wyatt said his son Caden came out as gay last year, and this year, the family went to Owasso’s pride parade.
That’s where they bought the “Ally Flag” to show support for the LGBTQ+ community.
“They were at Owasso’s first Pride Fest," said John. "I bought that flag and he asked us, 'Can we put it up?'"
So they did and John shared it on TikTok, added some music, and posted it to the world in honor of Pride month.
“It just took off one day," John said. "It's crazy.”
The video now sits at nearly 2 million views and 440,000 likes. John, Caden, and mom Janell has been featured all over national news.
“People Magazine, BuzzFeed, I Heart," they said.
And for Caden, it’s been a whirlwind of support.
“I’m really lucky," Caden said.
John said he’s baffled at all the attention he’s getting for simply loving his son no matter what.
"I was just a dad supporting his son, and all dads should do that," John said.
And he said he wants to continue spreading this message of support, for all the kids that may not feel as accepted as his.
"I’ve had a lot of people say they didn't have that support, so I'd like to keep that going to help people out," said John.
John said they received some hurtful comments on their TikTok, but said, for the most part, the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
