At most grocery stores around this time of year, you hear bells. They are coming from your friends and neighbors volunteering with the Salvation Army to give back to those in need.
With just the jingle of bells and the jingle of change, change happens in the lives of those who are struggling.
"What better way to love your neighbor than to get out and raise money for people who are having a hard time," said Drew Tangren, a volunteer for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign.
People see these bell ringers across the country. They've been raising money since 1891.
"I remember seeing people in Santa suits when I was young."
Now, Drew wears the beard to spread holiday cheer.
“It's a fun way to do it, and I wanted to get my kids involved," he said.
“I am a ringing a bell," his son Levi said.
Levi joined him on his first day of Winter Break. Although he's not in school, his dad is teaching him important lessons.
"I am trying to teach him to love his neighbors," said Drew.
Change happens for those who are helped with the kettle, but Levi ends up changing, too.
"I am helping my community," he said.
The last day to donate to the Salvation Army Red Kettles is Saturday.
