First responders like the Tulsa Fire Department will continue to be out and about to keep you safe during the dangerous cold snap.

Firefighters, when they are out on scene, don't have much choice but to be out in the cold.

Andy Little with the Tulsa Fire Department said the cold doesn't really change how they fight fires. They'll be bundled up like anyone else who has to be outside.

However, Little said the cold impacts how firefighters have to handle their equipment while on the scene.

"We do have to take more precautions with our hoses and stuff after fires. You know, when we are leaving a fire we have to be able to respond to other fires in the future. So sometimes we have to roll those hoses instead of loading them on the scene. Take them back to the station where they can kind of warm up where we can load them properly," Little explained.

Little said it's important that firefighters drink water before their shift and stay hydrated. This way, they can respond in a timely manner.

You'll also see firefighters being a little more cautious on the roads.

"If we are in an accident on the way to an emergency call, we are of no use for the citizens. So it’s important that we get from the fire house to our destination safely and keep those firefighters safe on the way. So you know, we do drive a little bit more cautiously and have to slow down a little bit more," Little said.

While Tulsa Fire will respond to any fires that break out, they also will respond if you call them about issues related to carbon monoxide.
