The deal between Hillcrest HealthCare Systems and a Nashville-based company will affect more than 6,000 employees and 50,000 patients a year, but how?

Officials gave some detail about the $281-million deal Wednesday, saying Ardent will retain Hillcrest's employees.

The new organization will build on Hillcrest's name and teaching programs and provide an infusion of capital that enables it to stay on the cutting edge. Jamie Hopping, Ardent Health Services: "The patients benefit, because they know that they're going to have access to the greatest technological care that's out there today because of the teaching environment. So we think it's a win all the way around for all parties."

Donald Lorack Jr, Hillcrest HealthCare System: "I think to the extent that new technology becomes available, if it makes sense to us and it we've got the need here, I think you'll see us engage that technology on the spot."

The deal should be complete in 60 days.
