Updates from Big 12 Media Day 2

Posted: Updated:
DALLAS, Texas -

Bob Stoops led off the 2013 Big 12 Media Days (Day 2) by discussing his quarterback battle. He said junior Blake Bell is getting good competition for the starting job from redshirt sophomore Kendal Thompson and redshirt freshman Trevor Knight. Stoops also weighed in on the new targeting penalties saying, "It's a big penalty to have a guy tossed out of a game," but added, "anything we can do to make the game better and healthier for the players is a good thing."

Texas' Mack Brown said his team has the experience (19 returning starters) and the depth to compete for a Big 12 title. Brown also boasted that quarterback David Ash can "be as good" as former Longhorns Colt McCoy and Vince Young.

Dana Holgorsen estimated that his West Virginia squad lost around 90 percent of its offense from last year. Though known for his air-raid spread offense, Holgorsen talked glowingly about his running back stable of returner Andrew Buie and transfers Charles Sims and Dreamius Smith.

Baylor's Art Briles made his case for the Big 12 over the SEC as the nation's top conference. Briles said the Big 12's round robin schedule is tougher than the SEC's divisional schedule and that the offensive powers in the Big 12 were the reason the Big 12's defenses are looked down upon.

Paul Rhoads noted that Iowa State's overtime victory against Oklahoma State in 2011 has brought continued national attention to the Cyclones. Rhoads had a proud moment when he was asked about his son Jake joining his team as a long-snapper and vowed to "keep a watchful eye on him."
