TULSA, Oklahoma -

Power outages due to icy conditions have Tulsa County Emergency Management concerned.

It's asked the Red Cross to open a warming shelter to keep people out of the cold.

A warming center is now opened at the Crosstown Church of Christ at Admiral Boulevard and Harvard Avenue.

Since midnight Friday, the Tulsa Fire Department has worked an average of 100 more calls than usual.

Power outages will continue to plague most of Green Country though the night.

Near 21st Street and Peoria Avenue, heavy ice weighed down power lines, causing them to arc and catching trees and buildings on fire.

"We just go from one house fire to the next..." TFD Capt. Stan May said. "Didn't have a battery in their smoke detector."

May said more firefighters are always on call for major incidents like weather events and the department is mostly responding to downed power lines, injury wrecks and several house fires.

"They've been going call to call, but we've been able to handle it all," May said.

May said crews are doing their best to get to calls quickly, but gave to stay safe in the slick roads.

"It's going to start refreezing tonight roads are going to be slick... be careful," he said.

In Broken Arrow, ice is covering trees everywhere.

One large tree is threatening to fall right on Dan Frye's home near 101st and Elm Streets.

Frye says his tree has survived other ice storms in the past.

"You keep hearing it cracking and branches dropping, you know, or wonder if it's going to fall on the house the car," he said.

Volunteers will be on hand at the Crosstown Church of Christ and officials anticipate keeping the shelter open until Sunday morning.
