The state Department of Health is investigating a measles exposure in Pottawatomie County.
Measles was identified in a person from another state who visited the Shawnee area in April. Measles remains airborne for up to two hours in a room after the person with measles left an indoor area.
According to the investigation, the infected person visited FireLake Discount Foods, 1570 Gordon Cooper Drive in Shawnee, from 7 to 9 p.m. on April 27 and Nail Spa, 4409 N Kickapoo Avenue in Shawnee, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on April 28.
The OSDH is working with these organizations to identify people that may have been exposed, and to inform them of the possible exposure and provide recommendations.
People are protected from the virus if they are immunized with two doses of the measles-containing vaccine after their first birthday or if they were born during or before 1957.
Anyone who might have been exposed are asked to call the Pottawatomie County Health Department at 405-273-2157 or the OSDH epidemiologist-on-call at 800-234-5963. Native Americans may call the Citizen Potawatomie Nation Health Services at 405-273-5236 and ask for public health.
