Sometimes the spotlight makes men wilt. Sometimes, on rare occasions, men rise to greatness when that spotlight is at its white hottest.
That was the situation Monday afternoon at Chuck E Cheese. I was down to my last token. The record on the All-Star Pop-a-Shot stood at 72...set moments earlier by my son. A record that the Chuck E Cheese employee in the suspenders and pizza-stained shirt said would likely stand for days. But not if I could help it.
With my wife assuring me that this was it...there would be no more token purchases, I stepped to the line and proceeded to make history. Tunnel vision. The ringing of the skee ball machines and the intoxicating music of Chuck E himself went silent as I sank shot after shot. Dale Ellis in his prime only dreamed of finding a zone like I was in. I was so hot I was disrespecting the legitimacy of the game.
When the final horn sounded I glanced at the scoreboard. 78! The crowd erupted! Kids high-fived each other. Men looked on in jealousy.
Sometimes the spotlight is meant for champions.
