An adolescent black bear escaped capture in Muskogee Monday evening.

The bear was found in a tree in an east Muskogee neighborhood just before dark. Police officers and an Oklahoma Department of Wildlife supervisor were called and made several attempts to get the bear to come down safely.

They say the bear appears to be 18 months to two years old and weighs 80 to 100 pounds.

Wildlife supervisor Craig Endicott said they fired a tranquilizer dart at the bear, but he just climbed higher. They fired a second dart and thirty minutes later the bear fell to the ground and ran off.

Endicott says they eventually lost sight of the bear and don't know if he was still in the area.

Rick Wells visited the Muskogee neighborhood and will have more on this story on News On 6 at 6 p.m.
