NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- Oklahoma's women's basketball team has a new scholarship player.
Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale surprised walk-on sophomore guard Lauren Willis of Overland Park, Kan., with the scholarship papers during the Sooners' annual holiday party.
Coale says Willis had earned the scholarship because of her commitment, dedication to the program and selfless attitude.
The 5-foot-11 Willis turned down scholarship offers from a handful of schools, including some in the Big 12, to walk on at Oklahoma. She has averaged 1.2 points per game in six appearances
this season.
Her scholarship will take effect during the spring 2009 semester. Willis will be the Sooners' 13th player on scholarship.
