A woman from Catoosa called us with a concern about her AT&T long distance bill. The problem was a charge for $11.98 that showed up on her October statement. It was for an out of state call to 555-1212. She thought there was an error.

We called AT&T, and found out that there's no mistake. The company charges a flat rate of $9.99 to call out of state for directory assistance. There are extra fees if they connect the call.

Consumer 6 checked with the other two main long distance companies to find out their fees. MCI Worldcom charges 99 cents for out of state directory assistance. Sprint charges between $1.00 and $7.00 depending on the request.

Before you dial, check with your long distance company to find out how much they charge. If you have Internet access, you can also look up numbers online. AT&T has a website called anywho, just type in name, address and state. There is no charge for this service.
