Police, Citizen Motorcycle Club In Town For Annual Trip Down Route 66

A national motorcycle club made up of law enforcement and citizens is in Oklahoma this weekend for their annual trip.

The group got a special escort as they made their way up Route 66 through Rogers County.

Not every motorcycle club that comes through Route 66 gets an escort, but one that came through Friday shares a special bond with law enforcement.

Nearly 40 motorcycle riders, who are part of the Regulators club, showed up at the Blue Whale Friday to see the iconic attraction and to meet Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton for an escort.

"We want to welcome them to Rogers County and see them safely through as they make their way on up," said Walton.

The sheriff’s office doesn't give just anybody an escort like this, but Sheriff Walton said they share a bond that extends to members of law enforcement across the country.

"The club is a motorcycle law enforcement group obviously to raise support and awareness for the needs of law enforcement, good bunch of guys and gals and certainly just a couple minutes out of our day today to help them safely through town," Walton said.

Several members from Ohio made the trip down. Duyane Ernst said one of the things that make the Regulators special is the group is made up of law enforcement and citizens.

"We obviously want civilian support and let these guys know that we're human just like they are. We just have a job to do and when we're not working, we enjoy our free time just like they do," Ernst said.

The group is in town for several days and has already visited sites like the OKC bombing memorial. Ernst said the rally is a good way to take a break from a demanding job.  

"It's a stressful job so you know we like to enjoy our hobby which is riding motorcycles," he said.

The group said they'll be here until Sunday and expect to cover over 1,000 miles on the road.
