Tulsa Warming Stations Opening Ahead Of Winter Weather

Tulsa Housing Solutions is gearing up for the cold weather coming in Friday night by making sure there are places for people to go if they don’t have a warm place to stay.

There are three main shelters that will be open tonight and throughout the weekend to keep people out of that life threatening cold weather.

The John 3:16 Mission, Samaritan’s Purse and The Day Center will all be opening this evening and will stay open through at least Sunday. Housing Solutions executive director Becky Gilgo said there are at least 100 spots available.

At any given time, Gilgo said there are 1,500 people who are homeless in Tulsa, but roughly 300 of those people are considered truly without any shelter at all.

If they need extra spaces, Gilgo said they have overflow options already on standby.

“We have outreach teams in the field now and will through the weekend explaining to people what shelters they can go to helping them with transportation,” Gilgo said.

Whenever the temperature gets below thirty degrees, Gilgo said they jump into action.

“Our stomachs drop when we see it’s going to be less than 30 degrees. We are always just trying to preserve life. We don’t want anyone to freeze to death outside or suffer frostbite or any other complications due to the weather,” Gilgo said. 

If you would like to help their efforts, Gilgo said they need people to donate coats, sleeping bags, and blankets in good condition to the City Lights Foundation.
