Oklahoma Bureau Of Narcotics Responds To Rise In Meth Trafficking

Ones of its biggest challenges facing the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics is amount of meth coming into the state, the agency says.

The agency said it is making meth busts daily with links to the cartel.

"20 years ago, a big loadout on the highway might have been five to ten pounds, but now we're seeing up to 250 pounds being brought across the border," OBN spokesperson Mark Woodward said. 

Back in the late 90s to early 2000s, Woodward said methamphetamine was mainly sourced through small amounts people cooked themselves. Now, Woodward said that 98% of meth in the US is sourced by the cartel and distributed to Oklahomans. 

To tackle the rising problem, the agency said it has a task force dedicated to keeping meth out of our state. Part of the task force's job: drug education.

Woodward said he wants drug education to be pushed by parents and educators. 

"If you can stop 12 to 14-year-olds from getting on the path of using marijuana, smoking or drinking, that can lower the chances of them being addicted to harder drugs like meth, cocaine and fentanyl by the time they are in their 20s," Woodward said.
