OSU Medical Center's First Baby of 2009 Turns 1

TULSA, OK -- New Years Day is a good time to look back at the year we had and also look forward at what might be.

Last New Year's Day we visited 2009's first baby at OSU Medical Center, and this year, The News On 6's Rick Wells decided to check in with Mary Elizabeth Adams on her first birthday.

Mary Elizabeth Adams is 1-year-old today. I brought her a little toy for her birthday but she wanted to play with the microphone.

Her Mom says she has seven teeth already, but a year ago at OSU Medical Center she was more into sleeping. Getting born is hard work and Mary was 2009's first baby.

She's had a big year. She won't remember any of this but back in October there was a big fire at the Denver Park apartments where she lives.

"We got a call from our friend, Joe. He told us to get the baby and get our family and get out of the house, there's a major fire on the 3rd floor," Alex Adams said.

Her dad helped alert other neighbors, and they got out OK. Their apartment didn't get burned but they had to move to another unit anyway. Mary's had a pretty normal year other than that and her mom says she's on the verge of walking.

"I am so excited, 'cause a few days ago she was playing with her toys, she stuck her butt in the air and stood up and, Oh My God, boom," said Samantha Blackmen.

What would a birthday be without cake, so after she got changed we headed upstairs to see what birthday cake tastes like.

Joe Caron's kind of an adopted grandpa.

"I've got five grownups of my own. I've got 12 grandkids, well 13 now," said Joe Caron.

Well, number 13 wants some of her cake I think, so let's see how this goes. Sometimes our biggest New Year blessings come in little yellow party dresses.
