Media Helps Tulsa County Sheriff's Office With Promotion Testing

Ever wonder how members of law enforcement train to hold news conferences? The media played a role in helping the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office choose who to promote to the rank of Captain.

Members of the Tulsa TV Media, including News On 6, asked two candidates a series of questions to simulate a real news conference.

Captain Billy McKelvey said the mock news briefing is part of test to become Captain. McKelvey said it's a stressful situation, to face to the microphone at 3 a.m. and decide what information can be released to the public - and what can't.

Several training instructors sat behind the media grading the deputy's performance. Both candidates are currently sergeants within the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office.

McKelvey said the Captain's test follows national guidelines for promotions.
