An Afton teen has died after the pickup he was riding in was hit by a train. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the 16-year-old boy died Tuesday afternoon in a Kansas City Hospital.

Nathan Smith, 16, was critically injured in the accident that took place just before 5 p.m. Friday, December 5, 2014, on County Road 210 near U.S. Highway 69, according to The Grove Sun.

He was a passenger in a pickup driven by 18-year-old Tyler Malinski of Afton. The pickup failed to yield at the railroad tracks and was struck by a 49-car Burlington Northern Santa Fe train, investigators say.

Malinski was thrown about 100 feet from the pickup and was taken to a Joplin hospital with head and other injuries. Neither teen was wearing a seat belt, an OHP report states.

The Afton Fire Department assisted with the wreck.
