Jorge Zuniga was found dead outside the St. Thomas Square Apartment Complex near 61st and Peoria late Saturday night. Homicide detectives have arrested Keelan McDuffie after releasing a photo of the victim.
TPD Sgt. Dave Walker said officers were called to the complex around 10:45 p.m. on a report of a shooting and car crash. They found the 22-year-old Zuniga's body dead of a gunshot wound inside a wrecked 2007 silver Jeep Compass.
Security officers at the complex reported a gunshot but were at the back of the complex and didn't see anything, according to TPD Sgt. Ken Simpson.
Officers found the Jeep crashed into a fence with a bullet hole in the front driver's side door, he said. Witnesses said they heard one muffled gunshot and observed a man running west down 61st Street.
Further investigation revealed that Zuniga called McDuffie's ex-girlfriend before his death, an arrest report says. Police made contact with the woman at her apartment and she told them where to find McDuffie. McDuffie had several outstanding misdemeanor warrants and was taken into custody, TPD said.
The woman told police in an interview that on Friday she and Zuniga were together and "he became upset with her because she would not have sex with him. She stated that he left her at Admiral and Harvard and made her walk back to 61st and Peoria. She stated that she called her ex-boyfriend, Keelan [McDuffie], and told him about what happened," the report says.
The woman reportedly told police McDuffie was upset with the way Zuniga treated her. According to the report, she told police Zuniga began texting her on Saturday and she also observed McDuffie with a gun before the murder.
Walker said McDuffie was with the woman outside of the apartment complex when Zuniga pulled in the parking lot to meet with her. McDuffie confronted Zuniga, and shot Zuniga as he was backing up to get away from the assault, according to Walker. The vehicle crashed into the iron fencing surrounding the complex.
The report says McDuffie told the woman he shot into Zuniga's vehicle, but he didn't know if he hit him. The woman also said that McDuffie later reiterated the confession to her, according to the report.
