The Tulsa Police Department welcomed 17 new officers in a graduation ceremony Friday. The officers-in-training prepared for the day since they joined the academy in May.
Tons of families and loved ones came out to support the recruits as they were sworn in and became officers-in-training. The department's training director said they've endured nearly 1,150 hours of instruction which is more than twice the training required by the state.
The new officers learned about legal issues, firearms and defensive tactics, among other tools they'll need in the field. The new officers were sworn in by Chief Chuck Jordan, then awarded their badges.
Families were cheering loudly as the men and women officially joined the department. Officers-in-training will now complete a 16-week training program at each of the department's patrol division.
