TULSA, Oklahoma - Tulsa Police said two of their divisions will focus on enforcing traffic laws in construction areas during the month of January. The Riverside and Gilcrease traffic units will focus on enforcing laws in existing construction zones.

The Riverside division covers the area west of South Sheridan Road and south of East 11th Street. The Gilcrease division is north of 11th Street.

Police will randomly monitor all construction zones in those areas, and no warnings will be issued, a TPD news release states. A citation for violations in a construction zone costs from $150 to $500 and can include jail time, police said.

"Traffic violations in construction zones are a leading cause of serious injury and fatality collisions in work zones," the release states.

Drivers are reminded to:

  • Stay alert
  • Put down their electronic communication devices
  • Pay special attention to warning signs in construction zones
