TULSA, Oklahoma -

Fire destroyed part of an abandoned motel on Route 66 in Tulsa Wednesday afternoon.
The fire happened at the Brookshire Motel on 11th near Garnett.

The motel has been abandoned for a long time so investigators say it's possible someone broke in but there were thunderstorms in the area at the time so it's also possible lightning caused it.

The City of Tulsa had been trying to get the motel torn down for years, but that effort was opposed by people who support preserving the old buildings along Route 66.

The Route 66 Commission says it was doing everything it could to preserve the 1940s building and is saddened by the fire.
