HARRAH, Oklahoma -- A smoke detector helped a mother and her three children safely escape a fire that destroyed their Harrah home Tuesday morning.
Just before 5 a.m., the blaring smoke alarm awakened the family at 178000 E. Reno. The mother grabbed her kids, got out of the house and called firefighters.
Crews arrived just minutes later, but strong winds spread the flames so quickly they were not able to save the house.
The woman, her husband and their children had lived in the house for about 10 years. The couple told News 9 they'd spent a lot of time and energy remodeling the older home.
The husband, who was at work when the fire started, said he and his wife had marveled just a few days ago how their house had survived the recent tornadoes and wildfires in the area.
Fortunately, the family has insurance. Firefighters don't know yet what caused the fire.
