A plan is forming to create an urban wilderness in north Tulsa. It would be situated near a school and new developments planned along 36th Street.
The development would be along 200 acres of city-owned property that is now off-limits for building because it's in the floodplain of Flat Rock Creek.
A community development group wants to build a master-planned urban wilderness on the site. The 200 acres is under the control of the Parks Department.
The master plan shows lots of trails stretching across the property from Peoria to Lewis that make it accessible to kids in north Tulsa.
It would extend west of Peoria to connect Walt Whitman Elementary, Tulsa Tech and south to a new industrial park that's being planned along Mohawk Boulevard.
The new urban wilderness would create an accessible area with plenty of wildlife on this property.
The Parks Board gave the first approval to the plan Tuesday, clearing the way for the fundraising and grant writing to go ahead on the project.
