A man convicted of kidnapping and killing a Tulsa postal worker in 1983 is back in Oklahoma after serving time in a federal prison.
Bobby Eugene Moffitt, 57, was convicted of kidnapping and killing Charles Stone. Court documents say Moffitt and a woman named Martha Richardson kidnapped stone on November 16, 1983, as Stone went to buy antifreeze for his 1978 Plymouth Horizon. The documents say Moffitt shot Stone and that he and Richardson left him to die at 1730 East 7th Street. His body was found there a month later.
The documents say Moffitt and Richardson were driving Stone's Plymouth to Indiana when it broke down on the outskirts of Carthage, Missouri. They then kidnapped a man named John Enyeart, 20, and forced him to drive them to Indiana. They shot him and left him for dead, the documents say, but he survived. He later identified Moffitt and Richardson as his attackers, according to court records.
A deputy found Stone's Plymouth and investigators found "numerous items bearing the names of Martha Richardson and Bobby Moffitt" inside.
Richardson was eventually arrested in Terre Haute, Indiana where she told authorities what she and Moffitt had done, the court documents say. Moffitt was arrested on January 24, 1984 near Memphis, Tennessee
On January 6, 1986, Moffitt pleaded guilty to robbery with a firearm and first-degree murder. The judge sentenced him to 15 years on the robbery charge and life in prison on the murder charge, and ordered the sentences to be served consecutively.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, he was released from its custody on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, the same day he was booked into the Tulsa County Jail.
Richardson, 58, pleaded guilty on June 11, 1984 to robbery with a firearm and first-degree murder and the judge gave her the same sentence Moffitt received. She is serving time in a federal prison in Waseca, Minnesota and is scheduled to be released on December 17, 2023.
