TPD Identifies Man Shot And Killed By Tulsa Police In Friday Incident

Tulsa Police have identified the individual who was shot Friday night by TPD officers near 36th Street North and Lewis Avenue.

Terrence Crutcher, 40, was shot by officers after he refused to follow commands by police to show his hands, police said. Crutcher was pronounced dead Friday night at St.John Hospital. The TPD officer used a Taser before resorting to lethal force, police said.

Officers stopped to check on an SUV stalled in the middle of 36th Street North when the confrontation happened, according to the TPD.

“As they approached the vehicle a black male started towards them,” said TPD Officer Jeanne Mackenzie. “They asked him to show his hands. He refused to follow commands given by the officers. They continued to talk to him. He continued not to listen, not follow any commands as they got closer to the vehicle he reached inside the vehicle and at that time there was a Taser deployment and then a short time later there was one shot fired."

The officers involved are on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. 

The TPD announced in a Saturday media release that it will hold a press conference to address the incident at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
