The City of Okmulgee has lifted a precautionary boil order one day after a 14-inch line broke near the water station.

The break left most of the city without water Tuesday, forcing businesses and schools to close for the day.

The break is near the water treatment facility, but it's surrounded by swampy land and a lot of trees; crews had to build a road to get to it.

Okmulgee city water employees had to go about 20 feet underground to fix the break in a nearly 65-year-old water line and restore water to 40,000 customers.

Tuesday, Mayor Steven Baldridge said the city’s water system was about 65 years old and that it could take millions to replace the lines.
