A convicted rapist has been arrested after a woman jumped from a moving car and ran for help, saying she had been kidnapped, robbed and assaulted when she was rear-ended at a Pittsburg County intersection on Sunday.
An affidavit says the woman was at the Highway 270 and Highway 1 intersection when her car was rammed from behind by a truck. When she got out of her car to inspect the damage, she said she was approached by the truck’s driver, a man who was armed with a knife. The man, later identified as David A. Cox, of Indianola, abducted her in her own vehicle, the affidavit says.
While he was driving her car, the knife was in his lap, he put his arm around her and asked her if she wanted to have sex with him, to which she answered no, she said.
She told investigators that Cox put his hand down her shirt, grabbed her breast, buttocks and rubbed his hand between her legs, the affidavit says.
Cox has served time in prison for rape and is on probation until 2031, Oklahoma Department of Corrections records show.
Cox told the woman he didn't want to go back to prison and he needed money for gas, so she gave him money and a bank card and begged him not to kill her, the affidavit says.
The woman said Cox then turned down a county road and she saw a house with a light on, so she opened the car door and jumped out while it was moving.
The affidavit says Cox was yelling after the victim, and a woman came running out of the house to help her.
Deputies said they found a knife near where the woman jumped. When they arrived at a local emergency room to interview the woman, she was in a great amount of pain, had a bloody face and cuts and scrapes, documents say.
Another deputy went to the original collision scene and said he found Cox with his truck and the woman's car still running. Cox reportedly told the deputy that he asked the woman to take him to get some gas, but she’s the one who started "acting crazy" in the car.
Deputies then attempted to arrest him, but he resisted until he was threatened with a Taser, the affidavit says. Deputies say he had siphoned gas out of the woman's car before they arrived.
According to the affidavit, a knife was found near where the woman jumped from the car, and blood was found on the walkway to the house and in the driveway.
Deputies say they found hair and scraping marks all over the passenger side of the car’s dashboard.
The woman was able to identify Cox in a photo lineup, the affidavit says.
He was arrested on complaints of kidnapping, first-degree robbery, larceny of an automobile and sexual battery,
DOC records show Cox has a lengthy criminal history and previously has served time in the penitentiary for first-degree rape, first-degree burglary and concealing stolen property. He currently is on probation in the rape case until 2031 after being released from prison in 2006.
