Ambulance Called In From Creek County To Help West Tulsa Shooting Victim

A 23-year-old man died Tuesday after being on life support following a shooting in west Tulsa early Sunday morning.

Someone drove Blaine Wells to the QuikTrip at 51st and Union where paramedics found him in extremely critical condition.

From the time the 911 call was made at 6:34 Sunday morning, to when Wells was taken to the hospital, took half an hour.

A shooting victim was in extremely critical condition at the QuikTrip on 51st and Union Sunday night, but our News On 6 crews were there before the ambulance.

News On 6: “Where’s your ambulance?
TPD Corporal Dan Miller: “Coming from Creek County.”
News On 6: “You’re kidding me?”
Miller: “No…Sapulpa somewhere.”

A spokesperson for EMSA said, normally at that time of the morning, they would be responding to five calls; but Sunday morning they had 11, causing a system overload.

They called for mutual aid from Creek County.

“I don’t know if there is a bus just getting off at 51st and looks like it's driving up Union,” Miller said.

Creek County records show paramedics received the call at 6:37 a.m. - in route at 6:43 a.m.

They told News On 6 crews had to stage for two minutes two blocks away before getting the all clear to enter the scene.

They transported Wells at 7:05 a.m. and arrived at the ER at 7:14 a.m.

When asked about plans to avoid future system overloads, EMSA said the operations team and management met Monday morning to review and discuss if, or how, changes might be made to their staffing.

Sometimes these unusual spikes in emergency calls happen. So, they are looking into how they could adjust.
