Cutting edge technology now available in Muskogee allows citizens to send video to 911, which gives officers an immediate view of what's happening as they arrive.
Citizen can download a free app onto their phone, and if they see a crime happening, they can shoot video and send it to 911. Not only can 911 see the video, but so can the officers headed to the scene.
An alert will sound every time a citizen sends video to 911, telling dispatch and officers in their cars to take a look.
The free app is called ICE Black Box, and it's very simple to operate and helpful to officers.
Officer Lincoln Anderson with the Muskogee Police Department said, "While the dispatch is getting all the information, the officer can hear the alert, pull up the screen, watch the video then have good, pertinent intelligence of the call they're fixing to go to."
Police said people get so stressed during 911 calls it's often hard for them to relay the best information.
With this system, you can send video and also call 911, but if you can't talk for some reason, just send the video and they'll know you're location.
It makes officers safer and makes the court case stronger.
“This is now evidence. Once the video is sent from your phone, it becomes evidence," Anderson said.
They are worried people will send frivolous videos, but they need to remember that it displays their name, address, phone number and location the video was taken.
It could also be considered filing a false police report.
The system is up and operational right now.
Citizens can download the app and start sending video to 911, the only hitch is that it's not in every patrol car yet, but that will be happening by the first of the year.
