Police arrested a Tulsa woman for child neglect after doctors alerted them to the condition of her 5-year-old daughter.

Doctors told them the girl weighs only 19 pounds.

Police said the investigation began on Sunday, November 29, 2015 when EMSA was called to a home in the 1900 block of north Norwood Avenue about a child who was having trouble breathing.

EMSA took her to St. Francis Hospital where doctors found she was severely dehydrated, malnourished and diagnosed her case as chronic medical neglect, according to police. Doctors called Tulsa Police and DHS.

Police arrested the mother, Christina Calhoun, 25. They said she had been offered help in caring for the girl for some time but did not consistently cooperate or accept the help. Police said attempts to monitor the child's condition were hampered by the mother covering the child with a blanket allowing only her face to be visible.

She has other medical conditions which may have been exacerbated by the lack of care and proper nutrition, according to police.

Police said they're still investigating because other people may have had access to the child but did not report the possible neglect to DHS or police as required by law.

Police booked into the Tulsa County Jail Wednesday afternoon on a complaint of child abuse. She's being held on $100,000 bond with a court date set for December 9, 2015.
