Oklahoma Appeals Court Overturns Man's Murder Conviction

The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals has overturned the first-degree murder conviction and life prison sentence of a 28-year-old man who was convicted of shooting his mother to death.

The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals has overturned the first-degree murder conviction and life prison sentence of a 28-year-old man who was convicted of shooting his mother to death.

Aaron Stigleman of Elk City was convicted by a jury in Beckham County of the February 2013 death of 56-year-old Karen Stigleman. But in a 3-2 decision Friday, the court ordered that Aaron Stigleman receive a new trial.

Among other things, the court ruled Stigleman was denied the right to a fair trial when the Oklahoma Indigent Defense System, which provided his defense attorneys, and the trial court denied funds to hire an expert witness to testify about how Stigleman was affected by his use of methamphetamine and other drugs.

The court also ruled that Stigleman's attorneys were ineffective.
