A group of 82 veterans headed to Washington, D.C. Wednesday on an Honor Flight.

Tulsa Police provided a special escort to buses carrying the veterans to Tulsa International Airport. The flight left for Washington at 7 a.m. and the veterans will return to Tulsa later this evening.

They will visit several war memorials.

Tuesday evening, the veterans from World War II and Korea were honored at a special event in Bixby.

"It's so surreal to be taking care of the greatest generation, because frankly, if it wasn't for them. They actually took care of us before we were even thought of," said Eric Cullen with Honor Flight.

Area elementary students also prepared a surprise for the veterans. The children wrote letters which will be presented to them at a mail call once they return to Oklahoma.
